In the last ice age, much of the lake’s water was released in the Bonneville Flood, an event that inundated eastern Washington and Idaho, carving out canyons and creating waterfalls that still exist today.

Most of the territory it covered was in present-day Utah, though parts of the lake extended into present-day Idaho and Nevada.
