An Irish folktale of a man called Stingy Jack

38.1% correct

The practice of decorating these “jack-o-lanterns” originated with an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. He supposedly tricked the devil on multiple occasions, and was therefore forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. This left his soul to wander the Earth, always waving his lantern to entice others away from their paths. In his native Ireland, Stingy Jack’s ghoulish face was originally carved into large turnips and potatoes. When Irish immigrants made their way to America, they brought their Halloween traditions with them to the home of the pumpkin. It has since become a favorite part of Halloween festivities.
