Hot Springs National Park began as Hot Springs Reservation in 1832. It became a national park in 1921 and covers 9 square miles today. The park includes 47 hot springs that dot the southwestern slope of Hot Springs Mountain. The hot springs flow at a rate of 850,000 gallons per day and the average temperature is 143 F. Numerous hotels and bath houses surround the federal park. It was a popular tourist area in the 1920s and 1930s, with such well-known visitors as gangsters Al Capone and George “Bugs” Moran.
