When did Fidel Castro announce his official resignation as President of Cuba?
Fidel Castro announced a temporary transfer of power to his brother Raul in July 2006. This temporary transfer was a result of Castro’s need for surgery for an acute intestinal problem. Two years later, Feb. 19, 2008, Fidel announced he could no longer serve as President of Cuba because of lingering poor health. The National Assembly of People’s Power met to elect Cuba’s new president. The Assembly chose Fidel’s younger brother, Raul, for the office of president. Source: LOC.gov
