The meeting of the 26th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) recognized a new classification system for stellar objects. Under the new classification system, the three types of stellar objects officially identified are planets, dwarf planets and solar system bodies. This classification categories revision saw Pluto demoted to dwarf planet standing. The five currently known dwarf planets are Eris (the largest), Pluto, Makemake, Ceres (the smallest) and Haumea.
